Wong-Suk - Jade Peony Characters

Wong-Suk is a character from the first section of The Jade Peony. He is an old friend of Poh-Poh's, and he soon becomes Liang's best friend.

The unusual part about Wong is that he has a disfigured face leading many to call him Monkey Man. However, he soon becomes Liang's best friend and they spend many hours together.

Wong enjoys his time with Liang because she does not judge him. In fact, she likes his disfigured face, and calls him her Monkey Man.

Liang initially loves Wong because he is like the Monkey King from Poh-Poh's stories.

Eventually, Wong is shipped back to China, a moment in the story that shows the worsening situation between the Government of Canada and the Chinese immigrants.

As Wong tries to organize his documents to prove to the Government that he should be able to stay, the author gives an idea of the "paper lives" of the Chinese immigrants. Many immigrants have documents with different stories and details about themselves. These documents were created so the people could enter into Canada. At the time, there was a Chinese Head Tax on immigrants, and it was very difficult for Chinese people to come to Canada.

Wong also tells a story about working on the railroad and helping his boss.  This is an interesting part of the novel as it provides an example of the many Chinese people that built the railway.
