Sek-Lung - Jade Peony Characters

Sek-Lung is the youngest child and the narrator of the third section of the novel. He is around 6 years old when he tells his story, giving a younger perspective on the family in Canada.

Sek-Lung, normally called Sekky, brings a comedic element to the story. His youth gives a different outlook on the story, and his attitude and fun-loving nature is different from Liang and Jung-Sum.

In his section of the novel, Sekky talks about some important topics. First, he discusses his sickness and his desire to go to school like a normal boy. When he finally attends school, he shows life in a Canadian classroom full of immigrants. It is interesting to see how the children interact. This is especially true of the Japanese and Chinese students. Through the battles on the playground, we can see the problems between the Japanese people and the rest of Canada. During World War II, the Japanese-Canadians were placed in internment camps as Japan was an enemy of Canada.

Sekky is also the character who is closest to Poh-Poh.  Because he is sick, Poh-Poh pays him special attention, something that sparks jealousy in the other siblings. This is shown more in the first two sections as Liang and Jung complain about the attention Poh-Poh gives Sekky.
